Raymond Bailey - Class of 1971

Raymond E. Bailey passed away Thursday, May 31, 2018 at the age of 64 at his home in Suffolk. He was a native of Philadelphia, Pa. and had been a resident of Suffolk for 13 years. Raymond was a Function Analyst for CICA for 16 years and had retired from the US. Navy, after 30 years of service, as a HMCM (SW). Over his career with the Navy, he was awarded numerous medals for his service, including Meritorious Service medal; Navy Commendation medal; Navy Achievement; Navy Unit Commendation; Meritorious Unit Commendation; two Navy “Eâ€� ribbons; eight Good Conduct Medals; Navy Expeditionary Medal; three National Defense Service medals; Armed Forces Expeditionary medal; Southwest Asia Service medal; Armed Forces Service medal; Humanitarian Service medal; SCA Service Deployment ribbon; Overseas Service ribbon; Navy Recruiting ribbon; and in 1980, Sailor of the Year. Raymond was of the Episcopalian faith, was a member of the American Legion Post 88, and graduated from Troy State University with a Master’s degree. He is preceded in death by his father and mother, William Bailey and Ann Dennison Bailey; his brother, James Bailey of Philadelphia; and his step-son, Timothy Massey of Newport News. Raymond is survived by his wife of 26 years, Carrie Bailey; his son, Raymond Bailey, Jr. (Erica Slayton); sister-in-law, Brenda Almond; two brothers, William Bailey of Pa. and Robert Bailey of Md.; two grandchildren, Dax and Hazel Bailey; three nephews, Vincent Almond, Kevin Almond and Brian Almond; and six great-nieces and nephews, as well as many friends. A visitation is scheduled for Monday, June 4 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home and a graveside service will be held on Tuesday, June 5, at 11:00 a.m. in the Rosewell Memorial Gardens, Providence Road, State Route 636, Hayes, Va. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Cancer Society.
